Ultrasound knobology: Practical image optimisation and interventional procedures on ballistic gel phantoms

Saturday, September 26, 2026, 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM | Orkney | Workshop | Imaging

Ultrasound machines can be intimidating and difficult to operate due to the complexity of the numerous settings available. In this lecture we will talk about how to optimise ultrasound settings to obtain diagnostic (and beautiful) images. We will cover the theory of image optimisation and ultrasound controls followed by a practical session in which we will practice scanning and ultrasound guided procedures on ballistic gel phantoms.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Locate, recognise and operate the main settings and probes on an ultrasound machine, and choose the right one for specific needs.
  • Gain insight into image quality, troubleshoot and adjust image settings to produce diagnostic ultrasound images.
  • Perform basic ultrasound guided interventional procedures (FNAs, cystocentesis) on ultrasound phantoms.
