How can we deal with the anaemic animal in an economic way such that we can avoid the need for transfusions – and if we have to do a transfusion how can we do this reasonably cheaply. This session will focus on the information that can be gained from a blood smear and basic point of care tests in the anaemic animal. 

Key Learning Objectives:

1. Show that you can interpret blood smear findings and basic point‑of‑care test results to rapidly identify causes of anaemia and guide cost‑effective diagnostics and treatments.
2. Be able to identify conservative medical strategies and targeted interventions to manage anaemia and reduce the need for transfusions while maintaining patient safety.
3. Know how to implement practical, low‑cost transfusion protocols and decision criteria to minimize expense and optimize outcomes when transfusion is necessary.
