Instrument training for dental surgery: Using dental instruments the right way makes dental surgery efficient, safe and much faster
Friday, September 25, 2026, 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM | Orkney | Workshop | Dentistry
In this practical, hands on session, we will cover recommended techniques for a wide range of dental instrumentation. Although nurses will not be performing all of these techniques in clinic, learning them means that they can help their vets transition to a faster, more delicate surgical procedure. Session is suitable for all clinical staff. The entire session is taught using cadaver replacement models and is supported by Bonovate Ltd and Eickemeyer Ltd, manufacturers and distributors of Dentanomic® and other dental equipment.
Key Learning Objectives:
- Gain an appreciation of dental anatomy, the role of the periodontal ligament and gingival sulcus structures in dental surgery. Learn various instrument grips and how to use them to minimise hand discomfort/fatigue.
- Use a measurement probe, shepherds hook explorer and curette.
- Use a periosteal elevator to lift gingiva without tearing tissue.
- Learn the different hand movements involved in elevation and luxation.
- Learn how to release periosteum and place low tension gingival sutures.
